Just to review a bit… Family Dinner Book Club is a monthly book club for your family. On the 15th of each month, we share the title of the book that is being featured. Then, on the 1st of each month we provide all the details for your special club dinner. Sarah from Daisy at Home shares a special menu to compliment the book. And, I will share conversation starters and a service project for your family. Sarah and I will take turns showcasing table decoration crafts to make with the kids.
We invite you to share a picture from your dinner with us anytime during the month on our Family Dinner Book Club Facebook page.
Now, on to all of the goodness!
A Color of His Own
The Book
A Color of His Own by Leo Lionni is the story of a little chameleon is upset because it doesn’t not have a color of his own. Every time he moves his color changes. So, he decides to stay in one place and maintain the same color. Soon he realizes that the green leaf he chose is changing. Finally, he finds another chameleon and they set off together to have an adventure together.
Topics
Here are six conversation starters to get your dinner book club rolling. Just click on this link (A Color of His Own Conversation Starters) for a one page PDF file that you can print and then cut apart. Use the cards on your chosen dinner night. You, of course, don’t have to use all of them or you may even have some other discussion points that developed while you were reading. These are just meant to be a guide. Happy talking!
- In real life, why do chameleons change colors?
- Do you think it was a good idea for the chameleon in the story to stay on the green leaf to try and stop change?
- Why is change sometimes hard for us?
- How do you prepare for change?
- Do you think that it is easier to face change with a friend?
- It really doesn’t matter what color you are on the outside. What matters is what is on the inside. What qualities make you special or unique?
Family Service Project
Change is all around us. Many children have recently experienced change and have become homeless or placed in foster care situations. This month, create a care package for a child who may be living in a homeless shelter or temporary placement. Encourage your child to think about items that may be of comfort to another child going through a big change. Items could include a cuddly stuffed animal, blanket or fun toy. Also, have your child write a note of encouragement to the child. Deliver your care package to a local shelter or foster agency.

Join us again next month for another Family Dinner Book Club!
