Our Playful Preschool Series theme this week is all about pancakes. I’ve been wanting to share this beginning sound activity for awhile, but was holding it for the series this month. Well, great minds think alike. In the past few weeks Coffee Cups and Crayons shared a super cute Pancake Number Match and I Can Teach My Child created Addition Pancakes. I think we all have been enjoying pancakes lately!
I’ll Take an Order of Beginning Sound Pancakes

Why We Chose This Activity
My preschooler has mastered letter identification and we are busy working on recognizing letter sounds. We are also pancake lovers in our house. Pretty much every Saturday morning we enjoy Homegrown Friends’ Buttermilk Oatmeal Pancakes for breakfast. We have also been reading one of our favorite Curious George books.
Curious George Makes Pancakes finds George helping out at the pancake breakfast. Turns out that he is a very gifted pancake maker and raises lots of money. George is even asked to come back to the benefit next year!
Setting Up and Playing
Materials needed: tan foam sheets, 1 yellow foam sheet, stickers, 4 paper plates, cookie sheet and a spatula
1. Cut 12 small circles from the tan foam sheets. We liked using the foam sheets because it made it easy to slide the spatula under each pancake.
2. On each circle place a picture sticker. You want to find sets of three pictures that all begin with the same sound.
This is our favorite sticker book to use when making literacy games. In fact we used it in our muffin tin reading games recently.
3. Cut small squares from the yellow foam sheet to represent butter pats. On each pat of butter use a letter sticker that corresponds to the picture stickers you chose.
4. Lay all the pancakes on a cookie sheet. Place the pats of butter to the side. Set the table with four plates.
Place your order telling your child that you would like a plate of pancakes. For example, you might say, “May I please have a stack of /c/ pancakes?” The child then serves all pancakes on the plate that begin with the /c/ sound. He should top the pancakes with the correct letter butter pat to correspond to the beginning sound of the picture pancakes. Continue to play until all pancakes have been served.
Later in the day my kids wanted to play drive-thru pancake shop. They would take turns riding up to the window on their plasma car and place their order. It was so neat to see them extend their play!

What a fantastic idea – I have never had pancakes with butter – in the UK we tend to have them with lemon and sugar in Costa Rica they were covered in honey but never with butter… I am really intrigued now as to what they would be like

It is fascinating to me to hear the differences in eating pancakes around the world. I’ve had them with honey in fact my kids love them that way. But, I’ve never had them with lemon and sugar!

What a great learning activity. I love that you made the pat of butter with the corresponding letter to place on top of the pancakes that begin with that letter. So creative and fun!

This is such a great idea, Jodie! I added that sticker book to my Amazon cart. Thanks for the recommendation! I got the crayon rocks on your recommendation last week and they have been awesome! They were exactly what we needed to encourage a better grasp with our son. He didn’t want to use broken crayons, but loves the “rocks.”
Jodie Rodriguez says
Danielle, I’m glad the crayon rocks were a hit! I think you’ll find lots of uses for the sticker book too.
