Just to review a bit… Family Dinner Book Club is a monthly book club for your family. On the first of each month, we share the title of the book that is being featured. Then, on the 15th of each month we share all the details for your special club dinner. This month, Liska from Adventure in a Box shares art and craft ideas for decorating your dinner table. Sarah from Daisy at Home shares a special menu to compliment the book. And, I will share conversation starters for your special family dinner. We invite you to share a picture from your dinner with us anytime during the month on our Family Dinner Book Club Facebook page. Now, on to preparing for book club this month!
Family Dinner Book Club: Pippi Longstocking
The Book
There is a new neighbor in town and her name is Pippi Longstocking. She has crazy red pigtails, no parents to tell her what to do, a horse that lives on her porch, and a flair for the outrageous that seems to lead to one adventure after another!
Table Topics
I’m pleased to share six conversation starters to get your Pippi Longstocking book club rolling. Just click on this link (Pippi Longstocking Conversation Starters) for a one page PDF file that you can print and then cut apart. Use the cards on your chosen dinner night. You, of course, don’t have to use all of them or you may even have some other discussion points that developed while you were reading. These are just meant to be a guide. Happy talking!
- Pippi is a thing-finder. Have you ever found something? What was it? If not, what would you love to find?
- How would you describe Pippi’s personality? Do you have any of the same traits?
- Pippi is a great storyteller. Let’s tell our own story about Pippi.
- Do you think that Pippi uses good manners? Why or why not?
- How is the village that Pippi lives in different from your town?
- Would you like to have Pippi as a friend? Why or why not?
Adapting for Different Ages
Though Family Dinner Book Club works very well for children ages 4-8, you can adapt the club for younger and older children. Younger children may enjoy this book list from The Artful Parent. It’s called Non Traditional Princess Books that Empower our Daughters. Older children may prefer to read Pippi Longstocking on their own and then discuss chapters after they read.
Table Decorations

I absolutely LOVE your Family Book Club idea! How fun!!! I’m a huge fan of anything that brings books to life for kids, and this has the added bonus of making it a family adventure. Thank you so much for sharing … I look forward to your future Family Book Club ideas 🙂

I love this book too! Even though my son is too little to read the story, maybe I can discuss it with my husband. 🙂 I want to know what he thinks about Pippi. She has always been my hero, and I was dying to have a friend like her. One of my favourite chapters is actually the one where she acts as a thing-finder: she is so happy with a couple of silly things she finds on the street, but she makes sure that her friends get some small treasures.
…or the way she told them stories about a lemonade tree…
…or how she ship-wrecked all of them, but promised Tommy and Annika’s parents that she will take care of their children…

Love this book, and I can’t wait to sit down and discuss it with my family. Great talking points here. I would love to have Pippi as a friend because she certainly knows how to be adventurous!
