The Playful Preschool Series theme this week is flowers. Spring is a wonderful time to observe all the beautiful flowers growing and blossoming. We had fun adding an alphabet activity into our flower exploration!
Flower Vases Alphabet Activity
Why We Chose This Activity
On a daily basis my 3 year-old brings me a bouquet of dandelions! He is slowly working on letter identification so I thought I would take advantage of his interests in flowers/weeds and tie it to a little literacy learning.
Setting Up
Materials Needed: 6-8 baby food jars, alphabet stickers or labels, fresh picked flowers, water, watering can
1. On each baby food jar place an alphabet sticker. We chose letters we are working on currently.
2. Fill a small watering can or pitcher with water.
3. Let your child pick a small bouquet of flowers.
Time to Play
As we set out the jars/vases we talked about each letter on the jar.
Then my son filled each container with water. This was definitely his favorite part! Pouring water is a great thing for preschoolers to work on too.
He then decided how he wanted to arrange the flowers in each vase. We talked about the colors and sizes of the flowers.
I also asked the following questions.
Which letter vase will you put that flower?
How many flowers did you put in the “G” vase?
Is there a purple flower in the “U” vase?
I loved that I could talk to him while he was playing and plant a little literacy learning!
This was a very simple but effective alphabet activity that works great for spring and summer outdoor learning.
