It’s the second Monday of the month and that means it’s time for Virtual Book Club for Kids. Each month we join several other awesome bloggers and feature books for kids by different authors. This month we are highlighting the great Mem Fox!

It was difficult to choose one of Fox’s books to feature because there are so many favorites. Topping our list is Whoever You Are, Koala Lou, Time for Bed and Wilfrid Gordon McDonald Partridge.
Exploring Whoever You Are
The Book
Whoever You Are is a celebration of our diverse culture spotlighting our similarities and differences. It’s Fox’s second book on peace and equality.
I love the beautiful message at the end of the book:
“Smiles are the same,
and hearts are just the same-
wherever they are,
wherever you are,
wherever we are,
all over the world.
Though this book is geared towards younger readers, I also think it’s perfect for those who are graduating and moving out into the world.
Visit Mem Fox’s site for more background on how the book came to be published.
The Activity
After reading this beautiful book, create a daily visual reminder of all of us being part of the world.
- You will need a mirror to start. We purchased ours at the Dollar Store.
- Using cardstock create a border around the mirror. Tape the border to the back of the mirror with clear packing tape.
- Look through magazines and cut out faces of all different shapes, sizes and colors. This is a great vocabulary building opportunity. Glue the images on the border to create a collage.
- Each day, write a focus word for the day on the mirror with window markers. Some words we’ve tried have included joyful, inclusion, peaceful, caring, and accepting. Encourage everyone in the family or class to look into the mirror each day and reflect on the word of the day.
We are all a part of the world. Let’s look for ways to connect with those around us!
