This month the Poppins Book Nook hosted by Enchanted Homeschooling Mom is featuring books about dinosaurs.  We chose an oldie but goodie- Danny and the Dinosaur by Syd Hoff.  I remember this beginning reader from my childhood so it was fun to reread it with my little boy.

danny and the dinosaur by syd hoff

In the story, Danny goes to the museum to see the dinosaurs and ends up getting to enjoy the day outside with one that comes to life.  Together, they visit the zoo, walk through the town, play hide-and-seek and more.

Since my 2 year-old has really been into playing hide-and-seek lately, he especially enjoyed that part of the story.  After reading, he just had to play some more!  So, I came up with some super easy ways to practice our alphabet while playing hide-and-seek.

Literacy Hide-n-Seek

Hide-and-Seek Version 1:  Say Your ABCs Hide-n-Seek

Instead of the “finder” counting, have them recite their ABCs instead!  When they reach “Z”, they are reading to find the “hider”!

Hide-and-Seek Version 2:  Hide the Letters

For this version, we hid some alphabet letters cut from colored foam.  We chose 3-4 letters that we’ve been practicing recognizing.  One person hides the letters in the designated hiding area and then the “seeker” locates each one naming the letter when it’s found.

I LOVE the Hide and Seek ideas! We’re going to have to start “counting” with our ABCs when we play from now on.
