We have had so much fun sharing literacy ideas for preschoolers this year in our new Playful Preschool Series. Each week we join together with some other great bloggers to bring you playful and educational ideas to use with preschoolers. Today, I’m sharing some of my favorites activities from Growing Book by Book.
Literacy Ideas
Parking Garage
This parking garage is a fun way to practice learning the letters in your name and cleaning up the room at the same time.
Labeling the Farm
Label the farm helps beginning writers practice their writing skills.
Post Office
Dramatic play is a wonderful opportunity for kids to practice their oral language skill. This post office play idea also helps kids with writing. You have to see the easy mailbag we created with recycled materials.
Runaway Letter
Runaway Letter is still one of our favorite games to play. It is loved by my toddler and preschooler!
Billboards
Environmental print is some of the first reading your child will read. These are fun environmental print billboards for car and truck play.
Super Hero Comprehension
Yes, you can and should work on comprehension skills even before your child starts to read. Super Inferrer is a fun way to work on an important comprehension strategy.
Write from the Start
My preschool son is a reluctant writer. We started trying the ideas from The Write Start book and have been amazed at the results. They are all fun and playful.
Giving Thanks
I’m always looking for ways to teach my kids to be thankful. We came up with this literacy filled gratitude project to thank our refuse worker. It could be adapted for any service worker.
Family Dinner Book Club
Family Dinner Book Club is a year-long project for the whole family. Each month we share a book to read with the family, table decoration crafts, a related menu and conversation starters to get your dinner club going.
READ
One of the single most important ways to develop literacy skills with our preschoolers is to read to them everyday. We share some great book lists on Growing Book by Book on lots of different topics. You are sure to find some new books to read to the kids.

Oh dear! I might have to stop reading your blog : ). Since discovering your site , I have ordered
over a dozen books . Children’s books have always been my weakness .I love your recommendations and Amazon makes it way too easy to order! After 35 years of teaching I should probably be cutting back and starting to save for my retirement……maybe next year ; )
Keep up the great work of nurturing young readers ( and old teachers lol ).
