Oh, the places we should go! Yesterday we explored different literacy activities that your child could do in the car on your road trip. Today we are looking at some literacy destination spots. Let’s start the journey.
South Dakota
Step back in time and reenact the Little House on the Prairie days at the Laura Ingalls Homestead. Wordplayhouse chronicled a trip to the homestead on her blog. She showcases some great pictures and pioneer activities.
Massachusetts
A few months ago, I featured the author/illustrator- Eric Carle. I mentioned the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art which looks like so much fun for any book lover. If you are in the area on June 23rd, Carle will be autographing his books at the museum!
Missouri
Each May, The St. Louis Storytelling Festival is held in 20 different venues. It features over 60 storytellers and 80 events. Activities are geared towards children and adults. For storytelling festivals/book fairs in your area, check out the Library of Congress’ Book Fairs by State page.
New Hampshire
Adventures in Parenting blog highlighted Storyland which is located in the White Mountains. This themed park has rides and activities centered around beloved children’s literature.
Every State
Public libraries and children’s book stores can be found in every state. Here are a few that look pretty cool!
Books of Wonder in New York which has fun events planned all summer.
I so miss visiting The Red Balloon Bookshop in Minnesota. I used to visit each year when my dad lived in Minneapolis, but haven’t been back in years.
My dad now lives part-time in Georgia, so I think I may need to check this place out- Little Shop of Stories. Boy, does this look like a fun place. Your child can even attend week long summer camps here. Camps include American Girl Camp, Heros and Villains Camp, Pirate Camp, and Hogwarts Camp.
Need more inspiration? Check out the book, Storybook Travels: from Eloise’ New York to Harry Potter’s London, visits to 30 of the best-loved landmarks in children’s literature.
Do you have a favorite literacy destination in your hometown or when you travel? Please let us know! Happy summer vacation.

Its like you read my mind! You appear to know so much about this, like you wrote the book in it or something.
I think that you can do with a few pics to drive the message home a little bit, but instead
of that, this is wonderful blog. A great read.
I will certainly be back.

Jodie,
I absolutely love your new website look. It is so professional and inviting! Great job. Did you hire someone to do it for you, or did you do it yourself?
The book you reviewed sounds like a great summer vacation guide for reading books from different parts of the country. Very unique. Sorry I haven’t been around, but have been out of town for several weeks.
