Digital resources have their place in a child’s reading diet. These tools help us nurture a love of reading and writing. Today, Beth from iGameMom is sharing some of her favorite digital resources for poetry.
Through the work on my blog iGameMom, I have discovered many great learning tools for kids on various subjects. Poetry for kids has been our focus at home for a while. Today I am sharing some digital resources we used and tips on using digital resources, such as apps, CDs.
The best advantage of many digital resources is the portability. I have several poetry apps on my iPad, no matter where we are, we can find a poem to read together. It is nice that I don’t have to remember bringing books. This portability enables us to read poems at any place whenever we have a couple of minutes, and it directly contributes to the exposures my son has to great poems.
One of our favorite poem app is iF Poems. It is a poem app specially designed for kids, with 270 classic poems. All contents are kids appropriate, and all poems are categorized into different age groups for easy search.
Another big benefit of digital poetry resources, especially apps, is the search feature. For example, in the app iF Poems, users can search for poems by title, poet, subject, or just words used in the poem. Over the time, I learned it is important to choose poems on subjects that the child is interested in or is in the mood for at the moment. The search feature in the apps makes it not only possible, but also easy to find the right poem at the right moment.
Lastly, most digital resources have built in visual and sound effects that make the poems easier to follow for kids. One of my son’s favorite is the CD from Shel Silverstein’s Where the Sidewalk Ends. We have it in the car, and it is our most played CD during our car rides.
How do you engage kids in poetry? What is your favorite poetry resource for kids?
