Eating in Kentucky

In Kentucky, it’s all about the B’s: bluegrass, barbecue, and the famous whiskey known as bourbon. You have to be an adult to drink bourbon, but it’s baked into lots of kid-friendly desserts, from cakes to pies.

Oven-Fried Chicken

Deep-frying can be messy, but oven “frying” is much simpler and safer. This recipe makes use of an easy brine (or bath) to lock in the moisture, resulting in the most tender, flavorful chicken. It may seem like a long time to wait, but try it once and you’ll see why it’s worth it.

Eating in Massachusetts

Massachusetts has almost 200 miles of coastline, so locals have always feasted on seafood—especially clams. In fact, natives have eaten this mollusk for more than 2,000 years!

Chocolate Chip Cookies

Chocolate chip cookies were invented by accident in the 1930s, when Ruth Wakefield, the cook at the Toll House Inn in the town of Whitman, tried to make chocolate cookies by adding chopped chocolate chunks to her dough. Instead of melting, the chips kept their shape, and America’s favorite cookie was born! This recipe is a variation on the classic.

Eating in New York

New York State is mostly beautiful farmland, including dairies, orchards, and more fields of cabbage than any other state. But when you say “New York,” few people think of cabbage. They think of New York City!

Quick-Pickled Cucumbers

In the 1800s, there were so many pickle barrels and pushcarts in New York City that maybe it should’ve been called the Big Pickle instead of the Big Apple.

Eating in Texas

Nothing says “Texas” like the official state dish: a bowl of chili. While people in other parts of the country add everything from turkey to zucchini, there’s no messing with chili here: it’s beef and chile peppers.

Potato, Egg, and Bacon Breakfast Tacos

Texans love tacos so much, they eat them for breakfast! People in Mexico have long topped tortillas with eggs; this recipe (especially popular in Central Texas and in Austin, the state capital) honors that tradition and adds a few American morning favorites.

My 4 and 6 year are loving the illustrations and discussing each state. Recipes appear to be easy to follow. We have already picked two to try this week.

This cookbook is packed with learning too! I highly recommend this book for kids or anyone looking to expand their recipes to include all 50 states!

This children's cookbook is a visual and gastronomic delight. The recipes are easy to follow and the illustrations and photos are fun and engaging. Using this book to prepare different dishes with children and grandchildren is a wonderful way to explore the geography, history and regional charm of the U.S. The book includes notations indicating the level of difficulty for each of the recipes. Using this beautifully designed book is going to be a wonderful way for me to take my two grandchildren on a road trip around America, from my kitchen in Virginia!

This cookbook is awesome! We loved looking through and seeing the pictures, drawings, and fun facts about each state. A couple of the recipes seemed a little lacking (Chicago Dog, Popcorn Balls) that could have been replaced with more iconic foods but the others make it up the few disappointing ones.

I love the idea of exploring the United States through regional foods. I suppose this cookbook is intended for children, and they will probably love it, but all of the adults who see it on my coffee table pick it up and become fascinated. I bought this book for a child, but I decided to keep one for myself and buy another to give. The drawings and photos are beautiful, and the recipes are great. I even learned a tip about making hard boiled eggs that I had not known before. Each state is introduced with an interesting one-page commentary that combines history, culture, and local traditions. A facing page illustrates local food specialties, and the following pages present a child-friendly recipe and photograph of the finished product.

We love this book. It’s fun to learn about the state and what food they are known for. My only feedback is the recipe for the state doesn’t always match on the list of food they are know for. Not a big deal though
