Alison Murray offers an enchanting retelling of a much-loved Aesop’s fable with a mischievous twist.

Hare
(Leapus swifticus) can barely stay still for a minute. He’s the fastest on the farm. Tortoise (Slow and steadicus) can stay still for a very long time. She has occasionally been mistaken for a rock. So when they decide to have a race, Hare is certain to win . . . isn’t he? Through the meadow, around the duck pond, and straight into the carrot field. Carrots? Oh, dear. Whether encountering the classic tale for the first time or tracing the racecourse map to relive it, children will be quick to realize Hare’s folly and eager to join the cheering for easygoing, persistent Tortoise. She may be slow, but watch her go!

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreS-Gr 1—A delightful and witty retelling of the traditional Aesop fable. The story remains true to the original, while adding in wonderfully quirky descriptions of the main characters. In doing so, Murray makes the well-known animals that much more lovable. It is impossible not to smile at Tortoise's catchphrase, "I may be slow, but watch me go," as she trundles along at the bottom of the pages. An added bonus is the modeling of good sportsmanship by both characters, who go off to celebrate in the lettuce patch at the end of the tale. The illustrations are the perfect blend of full color and white space. Each character, though simply rendered, shows emotions and energy levels that really aid in telling the story. VERDICT An absolutely successful retelling of the classic tale; great for storytimes and recommended for any fable collection.—Jasmine L. Precopio, Fox Chapel Area School District, Pittsburgh

Review

It’s hard to tell a well-known tale in a fresh, new way, but Allison Murray accomplishes that in her version of these famous competitors...A friendly ending wraps up this excellent piece of bookmaking and reminds us there is more to life than winning—maybe a shared lettuce patch?

Murray's storytelling and digital pictures are both balanced and buoyant. The story reads as though it's a book-format Looney Tunes short, from paintings that mimic freeze frames and a sports-commentator voice. Clever and appealing.
—Kirkus Reviews

With warm, lively digital art and snappy narrated text, this new rendition of Aesop’s famous race will make a funny and satisfying read-aloud for both those familiar with the fable and those coming to it for the first time...Smart design makes the story more engaging through strategic page-turns and page layouts that cleverly illustrate the widening gap between the two characters as they make their way through the meadow and past the duck pond, the carrot field, and the shady tree.
—The Horn Book

Timeless and timely, Aesop again invites families to talk about the almost inevitable consequences of sloppy habits and boasting.
—San Francisco Chronicle

This book generally follows the classic tale of the Tortoise and the Hare but adds a bit of a modern twist (as well as some humor) through the language and illustrations. This is one of two versions of the story I purchased and much prefer this book over the more traditional one. My son is currently 2.5 years and enjoys this book - mostly for the colorful illustrations and humor (he is also a big animal-lover). While I do not think he is able to understand the moral of the story at this age, he enjoys the book nonetheless. I think this is a great addition to our home library and one that both of my children will continue to grow into.

Love classic literature for children, and this picture book retells the the loved Hare and Tortoise story in a colorful and amusing way. There are even some fun rhymes within. The watercolor illustrations are engaging and appealing. Children will enjoy seeing the path of the race. Watch out for the lure of those carrots, Hare! I liked the carrot-strewn mess which Hare left with a few bites out of each carrot.

Of course, we know who wins. Parents and teachers can explain that fastest isn't always best. Slow and steady can get you to the finish line. At the end you see that hare and tortoise are friends, and will probably race another day. Liked the first place prize put on tortoise shell. This is a fun read aloud for children as young as two through first grade.

It is super fun with the narrator talking to the characters. The awesome use of spreads and the introduction to the characters by a scientific image is neat:) It's a fun ride:)

Water color paintings are beautiful. Storyline fairly close to original- hate loses bc he stops to eat carrots and nap. Not much emphasis on the moral of the story, but there is a part at the end where turtle is a gracious winner and invites hare to go eat lettuce together.

This picture book is a retelling of the classic Aesop fable. The story is much the same with the added tantalizing feature of a carrot patch to get Hare to slow down and eat and then take a nap. As always, Tortoise simply walks along, not zipping at all. Hare awakens from his nap just that critical second too late and misses winning by a hair. The entire book is wonderfully accessible and readable with humorous touches added like diagrams of both Hare and Tortoise and their advantages and disadvantages. It reads aloud nicely, the pace happily more like Hare than Tortoise throughout.

Murray’s illustrations are large and will work well when shared with a group. Hare is a bounding and lean while Tortoise is rounded and with a determined set to his jaw. The illustrations show clearly that Tortoise is behind and the long walk he has to the finish line. While the snoozing Hare has the setting sun behind his full belly after leaving a trail of munched carrots.

Clever and jolly, this enduring tale is brightened by a fresh take. Appropriate for ages 3-6.

Summary: Hare, a.k.a. Leapus swifticus, and Tortoise (Slow and steadicus) will be racing today. A brief intro is given to each race participant: Hare can hardly stand still for his, while Tortoise almost doesn’t show up for hers. Then the race is on. The tale is familiar—Hare leaps to the lead while Tortoise plods along far behind until Hare is tempted to eat some carrots and take a nap, certain of his victory. While he snoozes, Tortoise manages to amble across the finish line. Hare can’t believe it, but Tortoise is a gracious winner. “Never mind, Hare, you just might win next time.” 32 pages; ages 3-7.

Pros: Beautiful illustrations provide plenty of action and humor to this fast-paced and funny retelling of Aesop’s fable.

Con: While “slow and steady” is alluded to, readers will need to infer a great deal to come up with the classic moral to this tale.

HARE AND TORTOISE is an updated re-telling of the classic Aesop's fable. It features water color paintings. In this story, hare is the fastest of the animals on and around the farm. However, he loves carrots and never passes one up. Tortoise isn't fast and is often mistaken for a rock, but she is always steady. The story unravels in much the same way and while the race doesn't change, there is a slight twist on the tale at the end.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great family reading

My 2 year old adores this book, knows all the words and asks for it every bedtime. The illustrations are like watercolour and really spark the imagination. The race course is on the front and back inside covers and you can really feel the energy of the hate racing and the tortoise tootling. The story is nicely written with some lovely but not over the top repetition. Completely our favourite family story.
