I think I have read just about every variation of the The Three Little Pigs this past year because my 3 year-old is obsessed with the story! We’ve done lots of literacy activities that have stemmed with the book that I plan to share with you soon.
Today we have a small world play creation of the story that is great for helping kids orally retell a story.
One of the neat things about this small world set is that the kids can help make everything that becomes a part of it.

Materials needed: 4 small wooden peg dolls, one paper roll, a small empty box, yellow tissue paper, craft sticks, Lego bricks, pink and gray acrylic paint, glue stick, craft glue, two pieces of green construction paper and a medium size container
Invite the kids to make the three houses (straw, sticks and brick). My kids actually came up with the materials to use for each one and had so much fun creating them.
The straw house was made by cutting small strips of yellow tissue paper which is great fine motor practice. We smeared the glue stick all over the paper tube and rolled in the tissue paper.
The stick house was made with an empty rectangle container. The front of the container was covered with craft glue and then craft sticks were attached.
The brick house was the most fun to make because my kids love Lego.
To make the pigs we kept it simple and painted small wooden dolls pink and gray. We also painted a number on each pig. You could get more crafty but we were going with easy for this project!
We set two pieces of green paper in the container to create grass and then the boys used craft sticks to create a road to each house.
Set all the pieces in the play container and you are ready for the fun.
I loved listening to my kids retell the story of The Three Little Pigs. Their retelling were filled with so many details and great character voices. They have returned to the activity over and over this week. My wheels are turning for other stories we could turn into small world play.
Here are our favorite versions of The Three Little Pigs books.
The Three Little Pigs by Patricia Seibert is great for younger children because it isn’t too wordy.
Steven Kellogg’s, The Three Little Pigs, is a longer read due to additional material at the beginning and end about a family waffle business. Yum!

These are all so creative – but I think I love the straw house the best! Thanks for the variations recommendations 🙂
