BLACK AND WHITE BABY BOOKS

I read aloud to my children before they were even born.  And, once they arrived in the world we didn’t stop but rather moved right into high-contrast books for those little developing eyes.  Here are some of my favorite books for babies in black and white!

BLACK AND WHITE BABY BOOKS

Why Are Black and White Babies Good For Newborns and Babies?

Books and reading aloud in general is great for children of all ages.  But, we particularly like to use high-contrast black-and-white books with infants and young babies up to about 6 months to stimulate vision.

Accordion Style Black and White Books for Babies

Accordion-style books are great for little ones who are doing tummy time.  You can lay the book flat or stand it up around baby to encourage your little one to lift his head and build those neck muscles.  Oh, yes, we are also building eyes too!

Tummy Time! by Mama Makes Books is a hit. High-contrast accordion books are where it’s at for infants and young babies. They are great for tummy time with bold images and this one has a mix of high-contrast images and photographs. Oh, and there is a page with a mirror. Yes, please!

Do you get the warm fuzzies when you see animals all snuggled together? Then you’ll appreciate Babies Love Animals by Susanne König. This accordion fold-out book alternates white backgrounds with black backgrounds along with lots of animals snuggled up in the shape of a heart.

Tummy Time: Happy Baby by Duopress Labs is a two-for-one!  On one side of this fold-out book, you get high-contrast black & white images.  Flip it around and you get to see lots of adorable and colorful babies. Oh, and there is a built-in mirror so baby can see herself too.

More Board Books in Black and White

Tana Hoban’s books are the first board books I remember seeing in the high contrast of black and white. Check out White on Black and Black on White.

Baby Animals Black and White by Phyllis Limbacher Tildes is full of beautiful animal images in black & white.

Hello Animals is black and white with a touch of brown. Meet a rabbit, bear, chameleon, and more in this game of hello. A surprise mirror at the end allows baby to say hello to themself too.

Happy Fox Books also has a series of chunky board books with a pop-out puppet. Enjoy Little Penguin, Little Cow, and more.

If you want and black & white book that is also a story, try Black Cat, White Cat by Silvia Borando.  This makes a good lap read while snuggling.

Perfect Black and White Book for the Diaper Bag

I’ve shared my love of the Indestructibles series before. I’m back to share about Taste the Fruit! by Lizzy Doyle. In this high-color and high-contrast book, very young children are in for a visual treat learning about colors and fruit. As usual, books in this series are chew-proof, rip-proof, nontoxic, and 100% washable. These are perfect to tuck in the diaper bag because they are light way or to use in a childcare setting because they can be cleaned. Also, check out Touch Your Nose! in this series too.
