One of my favorite books about friendship and being yourself is Gustavo the Shy Ghost. Plus, it’s a great pick for the Halloween season because the main character is a ghost. In Gustavo the Shy Ghost by Flavia Z. Drago, a shy ghost struggles with finding the courage to make friends. But, he decides to share his passion with others and in turn, introduces himself to a whole new group of friends.
Gustavo the Shy Ghost Activities
Use these activities with the read-aloud.
Vocabulary: shy, terrifying, brave, longed
Discussion Questions:
-Gustavo is a shy ghost. Have you ever felt shy? When? (before reading)
-What did Gustavo decide to do to show that he was brave? (during reading)
-Which qualities of Gustavo did his new friends enjoy? (after reading)
Literacy Activity: Making Friends
Skill: rhyming and beginning sounds
Materials: printable (included), cardstock or paper, scissors, and laminator (optional)
Preparation: Print a set of the printables. Cut the icon name cards apart.
Playing: Introduce each icon card to the students. Point out that each name rhymes. Invite the students to brainstorm other words that rhyme with each name card.
Then, show the students the picture of Gustavo our ghost. He is shy and needs help meeting new friends. Let’s make some introductions. Hold up one icon card and have students identify the beginning sound of each part of the name and then place it near Gustavo. Continue until all icon cards have been used.
Variation: Identify the middle or ending sounds of each icon name card.
