Our Playful Preschool Series  theme this week is puzzles.  We are sharing two puzzles to help your child learn how to spell their name.

Why We Chose This Learning Your Name Activity

Preschoolers work on learning to recognize the letters of their name and eventually learn to write their name.  In our house, we believe that this learning should be based on play.

We just made a few new batches of playdough so we decided to incorporate playdough play into our learning this week.

Setting Up and Creating

Materials needed: playdough and magnetic letters or letter puzzle pieces

making rainbow playdough

1.  We like to make our own playdough.  This time we tried Mama.Papa.Bubba’s playdough recipe.  It was so soft and smooth.  You could also buy playdough if you don’t want to make your own.

2.  Roll out a portion of the playdough.

3.  Use the magnets or puzzle pieces to stamp your child’s name in the playdough.  Lay the pieces off to the side.

4.  Ask your child to name each letter impression in the playdough and find the corresponding magnetic letter or puzzle piece.  Have your child place each letter in the playdough puzzle.

5.  You can also have your child practice writing their name in the playdough with a pencil or stick.  Have him work right underneath the playdough puzzle so he can use it as a model as he writes.

The kids also wanted to make puzzle mazes.  They had to create a path to their name.  I loved this extension that they came up with on their own.

That is a great way to repurpose puzzle pieces. This is a perfect activity for our kids. We will have to try it out.

This looks like so much! I’ll have to try it with my little one! We’ve practiced spelling words with the older kids before, but not with my preschooler.

I really like the idea of the puzzle mazes. Could be because I think mazes are super cool and unique to eachieving one made.
