Skill Focus: color word recognition, positional words, tracking, decoding, writing

Materials Needed: printable (see below) and crayons/markers

Preparation: Each student will need their own book so print one copy for each student, cut, and assemble.

Time to Play:

Cover Page: Have students write their names on the dotted line and color the mouse.  Read the title together and discuss the question mark.

Middle Pages: Have students follow/track with their finger as you read each page.  Students who are ready to read can track and read on their own. Students should color the paint splotch the designated color(s) on each page.  You can also discuss the positional words- by and in.

The rainbow page is a place for students to color the rainbow using the ROY G BIV name to place the colors in the correct order.

The last page is for students to trace each color word.  They can do this with the correct color pen or marker to match the word.

Students can then take their books home to share with their families.

More Activities to Do With Mouse Paint

Color mixing with your hands helps to build hand strength.  And writing with your finger or another utensil in that color mixture builds fine motor skills.  Try these coloring mixing ideas.
