“Who’s that tripping over my bridge?” I’ve been hearing that question over and over from my son after exploring The Three Billy Goats Gruff books this month. For the Poppins Book Nook this month, our challenge was to explore fairy tales. It has been fun to introduce my boys to these tales and many have become new favorites. After reading the story, we came up with a creative sensory activity bin to compliment the book.
There are many illustrated versions of The Three Billy Goats Gruff. We found our favorite to be by Stephen Carpenter. It’s a Harper Growing Tree book tailored to young readers. In fact, this title was recommended for ages 2 1/2 and up (Perfect for us!). The length was great for toddlers, but would also work for preschoolers and beginning readers.
Here’s a look at what we did next!
Literacy Extension Activity: Sensory Activity Bin to Extend the Story
We created a sensory activity bin to help with story retelling. I really love this tool to help build comprehension and work on language development.
Our sensory activity bin included:
printouts of the goats and trolls acquired free from twinkl (Just type in Billy Goats Gruff in the search bar for lots of printable options.)
green Easter grass (Shredded green paper or real grass clippings would also work.)
crumpled brown paper bags
blue tissue paper river (Blue cellophane or wrapping paper would also work.)
artificial flowers (The book references Daisy flowers if you want to get exact!)
bridge (We borrowed one from our train set.)
troll (We made this with an old child’s sock stuffed with a paper lunch bag and decorated.)
That’s it. Set it up and invite the kids to play!
