    Thanks for this!
I really like this kind of books too but… Something’s on the back of my mind and I just can’t hold it in. I’ve seen “W is for Wind” in many collections of weather book recommendations online. That’s the reason I bought it some months ago, encouraged by the great reviews and so. I was SO deceived when I got it. I’d say it’s a very special book and it won’t delight everybody.
It’s got much more text than I expected and it’s certainly oriented to older children. The words featured are not what I’d use to teach about the weather either: Barometer, funnel cloud, jet stream, knots (knots?!) quick weather changes, X-rays… The illustrations are not my cup of tea either, although that’s a matter of taste, I guess.
All in all, I’d really advice that, whoever’s thinking about getting it, check for a preview online or so to measure if it really is what you need, because it might not be the crown jewel of Weather books it seems it is…
Thanks for list! I love Lois Ehlert books! Yay!

You are right that the text in W is for Wind will appeal to older children. But, I have also used it with younger kids too. We name the object for each letter and talk about it briefly. One of the wonderful thing about alphabet books is that they can be used on so many levels.

Yes, I guess it’s just that I had wrong expectations. I wanted to use it with young ELL and it just didn’t fit my needs. My students don’t quite have the competence or the knowledge to understand neither the key words nor the texts in their second language, so I failed to provide a good reference for them. I bet in other contexts this book works beautifully!

I totally understand and agree that it wouldn’t be the best for new ELL students. It is tough when you are thinking you are getting an alphabet book that will help with basic vocabulary and then it turns out to be more technical then you needed. It is such a wide and varied group of books. I agree that Eating the Alphabet would be great for young ELL students. Patty’s Pummpkin Patch, Zoo Babies and A is for Autumn might be good ones too.
