Have you ever thought about incorporating reading rituals in your daily or weekly routine?  Rituals are important traditions in many cultures and religions.  They help us to feel connected, grounded and at ease.  Connectedness and feeling comfortable are two things we want kids to take away from reading books!

Here are three fun ways to create reading rituals in your family’s life!

3 easy tips for creating family reading rituals from growingbookbybook.com

Reading Rituals

1. Monthly Subscriptions

Anticipating something new in the mail each month to read is sometimes just as fun as reading what was delivered.  I love when my new magazines arrive in the mail each month.  My sons now share the same enthusiasm when their High Five magazine is pulled out of the mailbox.

2.  Nightly Reading Time

Each night before bed, we read three books together with my young sons.  This not only is a time for us to bond as a family, but also a time to unwind and settle down for bed.  It is our routine and we all anticipate it every night. Choose a time to read and talk about books together as a family.  Maybe it’s at night, before nap or at dinner.

3.  Family Dinner Book Club

Start a monthly family dinner book club.  Each month commit to one night a month to have dinner together and talk about a book read by the whole family.  It’s super easy to follow along with the Family Dinner Book Club team.   Each month we share a title for you to enjoy with your family.  We also provide table decoration ideas the kids can make, a menu to accompany the book and conversation starters to get the discussion going.  On the 1st of each month, we share all the dinner club preparations.

What reading rituals do you incorporate into your life?

Yes! As life gets more and more hectic with older kids in school, building certain reading rituals into our routine is essential, so important things like family reading time don’t get skipped. Great post!
