The Playful Preschool Series is all about outdoor summer fun this month. The theme this week is chalk. My boys are learning to ride bikes so we had fun adding an alphabet activity into the mix.

Why We Chose This Activity
So my 3 year-old is obsessed with riding his older brother’s bike and my 4 year-old spends a good amount of his outside play filling the driveway with chalk creations. We decided to merge the two interests.
Setting Up
Set-up couldn’t have been easier for this activity! Starting with the “A” create a letter road down the driveway or sidewalk with [easyazon_link identifier=”B00AHAJGXK” locale=”US” tag=”groboobyboo-20″]chalk[/easyazon_link]. Leave a bit of space between each letter so that the road is nice and long.
Time to Play
Strap the helmet and jump on the bike. Have your child start behind the letter “A”. Call out a letter for your child to stop at on the road. Your child then rides to the appropriate letter and stops at that letter.
Return to “A” and play again.
This was a very simple but effective alphabet activity that works great for outdoor learning.

Have a great summer, and keep up the great ideas and good luck with the bike skills!

If you had a lot of space, you could have the path branch off with the correct sequence of letters and an incorrect sequence. The kid could find his way through the “maze” in order.

Such a fun idea! Summer is here but it will not stop raining! As soon as it does we will be doing this outside!

I’m really digging this idea. My preschooler loves to ride her bike and if I do this right I can make a nice winding alphabet path maybe try this at our local park where there is a nice path.

What a fun idea – I just need to find a road big enough that is safe enough but ideal to do in the preschool playground. Thanks for the inspiration this week.
