Birthday Books

This week if full of milestone birthdays in my house.  I turn 40 and my youngest son turns 1!  There will be a whole lot of cake eating and as always a lot of reading.  Today, I thought I’d share some of my favorite birthday books.

Full Disclosure:  This post contains affiliate links.

Happy Birthday Little Pookie by Sandra Boynton

We gave this book to my oldest son when he turned two because he loved Sandra Boynton books.  Now he insists that my husband make him a piggy pancake every Saturday just like Pookie’s dad in the story!

Where Is Baby’s Birthday Cake by Karen Katz

I love the illustrations in Katz’s books.  They are so bright and vivid.  My little ones love lifting the flaps!  The baby in the books opens up all sorts of birthday items before finding the birthday cake.

Carl’s Birthday by Alexander Day

This is a mostly wordless book.  Carl and Madeline take a sneak peek at the birthday party.

The Picture Book Crowd

It’s My Birthday by Helen Oxenbury

Animal friends gather the ingredients for a birthday cake.  Since everyone helped to make the cake, everyone gets to enjoy it too!

A Birthday for Frances by Russell Hoban

This was a favorite series of mine as a child.  It’s a story of siblings learning to be generous and not jealous.

Happy Birthday Hamster by Cynthia Lord

This is a fun lyrical look at hamster’s birthday.  Hamster wonders if everyone has forgotten his birthday, but soon learns that is not the case!

Some Birthday! by Patrica Polacco

One of my all time favorite authors, Patrica Polacco, takes us on an adventure as she tells about one of her memorable birthdays as a young girl.

The Chapter Book Crowd

Cam Jansen:  The Birthday Mystery #20 by David Adler

If you have a reader who enjoys mysteries and has just ventured into chapter books, Cam Jansen will fit the bill.  The covers of the books in the series have recently had makeovers.  Hmmm…a makevoer for my birthday sounds good!

Ereth’s Birthday (Tales from the Dimwood Forest) by Avi

In this tale, a grumpy porcupine thinks everyone has forgotten his birthday.  He sets off to find his own birthday presents and stumbles upon lots of adventures!

Stay tuned to see the birthday cake I make for my son’s birthday based on his favorite book.  Do you have a favorite book about birthdays?  Please help grow this list by sharing in the comments.

Happy birthday to you and the little one! Max has an April birthday too 🙂 We have the lift-the-flaps one, and we absolutely need to get the hamster birthday story. We have Hot Rod Hamster, and it is one of our favorites. Thanks for linking into the KLBH!

Renne, thank you so much. We had a great birthday week. I’m still coming down from the sugar high of all the birthday cakes.

I don’t think we’ve read any of these. We will have to check these out when the next birthday rolls around.
