I love to read!  Big surprise, right?  Children’s books top my list, but following a close second are books about literacy development.  I’m a bit addicted to buying and reading books that will help me be a better educator.  So, I was delighted when Melissa Taylor from Imagination Soup contacted me about her new book, Book Love.

The book is designed to help us nurture reluctant readers to blossom into enthusiastic readers.  However, I think that all readers could benefit from the ideas in her book.   Taylor looks at the reasons (too boring, too tricky, too blurry, too “sitty”) readers are hesitant and what we can do to help them.  The book is full of activities and book lists to help you on this journey.

Here are two of my favorite ideas from the book!

1.  Obsessions

Taylor encourages us to figure out what our kids are obsessed with and then match books to their interests.  She provides a list of topics that can help you determine those interests.  I agree that finding texts (It doesn’t just need to be books!) that match a child’s interests is a natural motivator to read.  My two-year-old son is into vehicles right now.  So, at our house you’ll find Little Blue Truck, Mike Mulligan and his Steam Shovel and Cars and Trucks from A-Z.  Taylor’s book concludes with several reading lists for all different kinds of obsessions!

2.  Book Swaps

Our book collections need to be refreshed from time to time.  New reading material can be a great motivator to all of us.  Taylor suggests hosting a swap party.  Have each child bring a book they are no longer reading to swap with someone else.  Taylor also suggests having the kids give mini reviews of the books to each other.  For an extra special touch, have snacks and make it a real party!

If you are looking for an easy read full of great ideas to motivate readers, you will want to check out Book Love.

What book has helped you learn more about literacy development?  I’m always looking for more ideas.  Please share in the comments.

*I did recieve an electronic review copy of Book Love.  However, all opinions are my own!
