Virtual Book Club for Kids is celebrating books for kids by Denise Fleming this month. It’s always so fun to choose a book by the featured author each month. We’ve read a lot of Fleming’s books. For this project, we have decided to feature Mama Cat Has Three Kittens.

Mama Cat Has Three Kittens by Denise Fleming
The Book
Mama Cat Has Three Kittens is the story of a Mama Cat and her three kittens- Skinny, Fluffy and Boris. Mama Cat leads and Skinny and Fluffy follow throughout the day. But, Boris naps. When Mama Cat, Skinny and Fluffy nap, Boris decides to wake and do all the things he missed while he was sleeping.
The Activity
The story is full of verbs. Many of the verbs may be new to young children. So, this story is a perfect opportunity to build oral vocabulary.
1. We created a play mat of the setting of the story. Just click here to download your own free play mat: Mama Cat Has Three Kittens Play Mat. You may want to laminate the sheet for durability.
2. Write each of the verbs (washes, walks, sharpens, chases, digs, curls and pounces) on index cards or small pieces of paper.
3. Next, let the kids build four cats (Mama, Boris, Fluffy and Skinny) from playdough.
4. Now it’s time to play! Read each word on the cards to the child and together act out the story with the cats on the play mat.
Not only will you be working on building vocabulary, but you will also be practicing retelling a story.
Books for kids provide so many opportunities to learn!

Oh my goodness, my little one would love this book! She has a stuffed Mama Kitty with 3 kittens (who attach with magnets to “nurse” – so cute), and she would love acting out the story with her kittens!
