Books for Kids: Love Books Exchange

It’s no surprise that we love books for kids in our house!  We also love to send and receive mail (well, the good stuff, not the bills).  A few years ago I heard about the Love Books Summer Exchange started by my good blogging friends Kim and Amanda at The Educators’ Spin On It.  Each summer bloggers are paired. They each send a book and activity to the other and then blog about.

This is my third year participating in the Love Books Exchange.  In 2012, we received Little Blue Truck which is a favorite in our house.  Then, in 2013, we found Shout! in our mailbox.

So, what did the summer of 2014 bring?  Well…we were paired with the fabulous Giselle Shardlow of Kids Yoga Stories.  We hit the jackpot because Giselle is a published author of many children’s books (more about that later).

Giselle chose to feature a book from Barefoot Books (another one of my favorites) that fit us perfectly.  It’s called The Journey Home from Grandpa’s by Jemima Lumley.   We ironically received it the day we got back from our road trip to grandma and grandpa’s house!

Journey Home from Grandpa’s is a sing-along rhyming book (includes a cd) that follows different types of transportation used to return from grandpa’s house.  Singing and reading this book occurs daily in our house since it arrived.

As a perfect fit to Giselle’s blog, she sent 10 different yoga poses for us to practice.  These were the suggestions she gave us to go along with the story. You can see all the directions for the poses on Kids Yoga Stories.

Train- Staff Pose

Tractor- Chair Pose

Crane- Crescent Moon

Barge- Boat Pose

Truck- Easy Pose

Fire Engine- Seated Twist

Arrive Home- Resting Pose

My kids are fairly new to yoga.  We’ve tried a few poses prior to this experience.  It’s something that I want to do on a regular basis with the kids!  I’m so glad we have these vehicle descriptions to practice.

I mentioned earlier that Giselle was a published children’s author.  She graciously sent us a copy of Good Night, Animal World: A Kids Yoga Bedtime Story.  We are looking forward to practicing our yoga poses with her book.

Check out the book we sent to Giselle’s family for the Summer Book Exchange.

I have wanted to start doing yoga with my kids. How do your kids like it? The book sounds perfect, my kids always enjoy rhyming books.
