Chicka Chicka Boom Boom is a favorite rhythmic book in our house. I will often hear my 2 1/2 year-old reciting lines from the book while he is playing around the house. So, when we found out that Bill Martin Jr. was the featured author of the Virtual Book Club for September, we just knew we would choose Chicka Chicka Boom Boom.

Chicka Chicka Boom Boom is the tale of lowercase letters who climb a coconut tree. The tree becomes so heavy, that all of the letters fall out. So, the mamas and papas have to come and help all the bruised and skinned knee letters. It’s a great book for learning the lowercase letters.
Literacy Extension Activity for Chicka Chicka Boom Boom
One of my favorite literacy activities to do with kids is to cook. Reading and following a recipe is a fun way to incorporate pre-reading or reading skills. We decided to make our original Chicka Coconut Banana Booms! It’s healthy with no added sugar and easy to prepare. Click here for a free copy of the kid-friendly recipe of Chicka Coconut Banana Booms!
Ingredients
(note: We like to use organic items.)
2 cups of old-fashioned oats
2 very ripe bananas
3 TBSP of coconut oil
1/2 cup of unsweetened coconut
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. ground ginger
1/4 tsp. salt
1 TBSP carob powder or cocoa powder (optional)
Directions
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Blend one cup of oats into flour. In a large bowl, add the oat flour, remaining cup of oats and all the other listed ingredients and stir, stir, stir. We like to mash it all together with our hands. Drop by rounded teaspoons onto a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper and slightly press down. Bake for 10 minutes. Enjoy! Makes about 30 cookies.

Bill Martin Jnr is one of my very favourite literacy educators and authors. The story of how he became a reader as an adult is inspiring. How he inspires teachers and parents to turn children onto reading, at any age, is phenomenal. His passing was a sad loss to the literacy world, but is legacy will go on for ever. He lives in the hearts of readers, young and old, everywhere.
