Nothing says summer like fireflies or lightning bugs as we call them.  Many of my childhood nights were spent capturing flashing bugs in mason jars.  Yes, we did release them a short time later.  This month, Family Dinner Book Club  features Firefly Hollow by Alsion McGhee.

Now on to this month’s book club details. We have lots of ideas to plan your menu, make table decoration crafts, have great conversations about the book and complete a family service project. We have thought of everything you need!  So, get a copy of the book and join in on the fun.

New to Family Dinner Book Club? Here is a little background… Family Dinner Book Club is a monthly book club for your family.  On the first of each month, we provide all the details for your dinner.  Sarah from Chef Sarah Elizabeth shares a themed menu to compliment the book. Laura from Sunny Day Family shares easy table crafts.  And, I will share conversation starters and a service project for your family.

We invite you to share a picture from your dinner with us anytime during the month on our Family Dinner Book Club Facebook page.  Plus, you will want to follow along there for more bonus ideas to use with the books each month.

Now, on to all of the details!

Firefly Hollow

The Book

In Firefly Hollow, a firefly dreams of reaching the moon.  A cricket wants to catch a baseball.  Two creatures have big dreams.  On their quests outside of their nations, they meet a miniature giant (aka a child).  And, this miniature giant has a dream too.  Together, the friends learn a lot about their dreams and life.

Topics

Here are six conversation starters to get your dinner book club rolling.  Just click on this link (Firefly Hollow) for a one-page file that you can print and then cut apart.  Use the cards on your chosen dinner night.  You, of course, don’t have to use all of them or you may even have some other discussion points that developed while you were reading.  These are just meant to be a guide.  Enjoy your dinner conversation!

  •  “You’ll know when the time is right.” is a repeated line throughout the story. How did each character “know” when the time was right in each of their lives?
  • Peter was sad and missed his friend Charlie? How did Cricket and Firefly help Peter deal with his loss?
  • If you got to be Cricket or Firefly for a day, which would you choose and why?
  • Did you have an idea of who Vole’s little giant friend was before the end of the story?
  • Do/did you have an imaginary friend? If so, does/did he or she have a name?
  • All the characters in the story had a dream. What dream do you hope to accomplish one day?

Family Dinner Book Club

Family Service Project

One theme of the book is following your dreams.  We all have dreams.  In fact over dinner, one of the discussion questions is for each family member to share a dream of something they would like to accomplish.

This month the Summer Olympics will be taking place August 5th-21st in Brazil.  Thousands of athletes will be competing to achieve their dream of winning a medal.  Watch some of the Olympics as a family and cheer on your favorite athletes.  You may even want to send them a message of encouragement through social media or with a handwritten card.

Table Decorations and Menu

Now, head over to Chef Sarah Elizabeth to get the menu.  Then, check out the table crafts at Sunny Day Family.

We hope you are inspired to create a fun and meaningful Family Dinner Book Club with your own family. Remember that we want to see pictures of your dinner.  Please share them our special Family Dinner Book Club Facebook page.

You can see all the books being featured for Family Dinner Book Club in 2016.

And, join us again in August for another Family Dinner Book Club when we will feature The Story of Ferdinand by Leaf.

I love the cover of the book. Brings back memories for me of catching lightning bugs.

This was such a fun book to read, and I love the idea of supporting an olympic athlete! I bet Cricket and Firefly would love to send cards to a professional athlete.
