The weather is warming up and that means more time spent outdoors.  It’s a perfect time to take our phonological awareness learning outside.  Today we are rhyming with a fun giant-sized rhyming memory game that can be played alone or with a small group.

Play a giant-sized rhyming memory game to build phonological awareness. A perfect gross motor activity for outside or inside.

Getting the Game Ready

You will need 8 small colored paper plates, the print-out of rhyming images (see below), scissors, and glue.

Print out the free download.  Cut around each image and glue the images to the back side of each plate.

Playing the Game

Find a grassy area, driveway, or playground and lay the plates out in two equal rows.

Each player gets turns over two plates and says each word.  If the pictures rhyme, the player has a match and should remove the plates from the board.  If the pictures do not match, they should be turned back over.  Play continues to the next player.  The person with the most matches wins.

I love that this memory game now includes gross motor skills. Great activity to get some of the wiggles out and still work the brain. I love it!!

Thank you for sharing with Everything Kids!

My 4 year old has recently become obsessed with rhyming (including making up lots of words when he can’t think of something that rhymes.) This will be perfect!

Who would have thought paper plates would be so useful for things other than food? Great idea!

Love it! I’m printing this as we speak. I just happen to have some paper plates on hand for crafts and I thought this would be fun for my 4 year old daughter to decorate the plates, cut and glue the pictures on. She’s always trying to find rhyming words. What fun! Thanks Jodie!
