Here is a phonological awareness activity that helps kids with syllables awareness. Building phonological awareness is like building the foundation of a house. You are setting things in place to build a future reader.
This activity would make a great center activity or busy box idea. All you need to do is print (see FREE download below), cut, and play.
Counting Syllable Fish
GETTING READY
Materials Needed: printable fish and fishbowls (download below), scissors, sticks or paper straws (optional)
- Print the fishbowls and fish included in the free download.
- Cut out the pieces and lay them on the work surface.
- Have a set of sticks or paper straws on hand. A drum or clapping with your hands will work too.
LET’S PLAY
Have the child select one fish and name the object pictured. Then say, “Let’s tap (or drum or clap) the word parts.”
Together, clap the parts and count how many claps or taps were used for the word. Then, find the correct fishbowl (1 syllable, 2 syllables, 3 syllables, or 4 syllables) to place the fish. Complete for each fish until all of them have been placed.
