Can you feel it?  There is love in the air today!   To celebrate Valentine’s Day and International Book Giving Day, we are introducing and GIVING AWAY a new book, Love Is In the Air by Jonathan Fenske!

Full Disclosure:  I received a copy of Love Is In The Air to review.  However, all opinions expressed are my own!

A few weeks ago, there was a little package waiting in my mailbox.  To my delight, author and illustrator Jonathan Fenske had sent me his first children’s book.  Love Is In The Air is a tale of Kite and Balloon who become friends up in the air.  After Kite lands in a tree, Balloon is separated from his friend, Kite.   However a run in with a bird helps reunite the two friends.

Love Is In The Air is a Penguin Young Reader book perfect for that beginner reader in your life.  Books for beginner readers often lack an interesting story line.  Love Is In The Air proves that statement wrong!  The tale of separation and reunion of two friends will capture your child’s interest from the first page. Jonathan’s bold and simple illustrations provide just the right amount of support for the text.

So, who is this new author and illustrator of children’s books?  I had the chance to ask Jonathan a few questions about himself.

Jonathan Fenske LOVES:
Favorite book as a child: Happy Birthday to You by Dr. Seuss
Favorite book memory you have as a child: Going to the red bookshelf my mom stocked with picture books and picking one to read.
Favorite spot to read a book: In bed before falling asleep!
Favorite place to fly to: We love going home to South Carolina and visiting family…and then taking off for the beautiful beaches there.
Favorite game you played as a child: I liked playing “Sorry!” as a child.
Favorite toy: Legos
Favorite place to look at art: My wife’s sister lives in New York, so anytime we can get there, we soak up the museums and art galleries.
Favorite art memory as a child: As a child growing up in Greenville, S.C., I visited the Greenville Art Museum often. I have such fond memories of the Andrew Wyeth paintings.
How did your family support your interest in reading and art when you were young?
As a child, my parents surrounded me with books. I know my love of illustration comes from reading all of those picture books. My parents were also tolerant of many, many little art projects and sculptures I made. Now that I am a parent, I get to turn around and praise my daughters’ works of art.
Would you like to receive an autographed copy of Love Is In The Air?  Jonathan Fenske graciously accepted my request to give one lucky Growing Book by Book reader just that!

I would love to be able to get this prize. We go to the library each week and check out about twenty books. They get read nightly through the week. My 2nd grader now wants to start reading to us but some of the books are not age appropriate with word knowledge. This book would be though and it would be one that he could keep instead of having to return it the following week.

I loved reading about Jonathan and his inspirations and how his love for illustrating grew. I gave me tips on what to do with my little one. I do a great job with displaying her art. Maybe that will encourage her to chase any dreams she may have with art. Thanks for this blog post.
