Lucky Duck by Greg Pizzoli is a funny read-aloud hit.

Susan the Duck is feeling very unlucky on a particular day for her new roller skates arrived and were too large and her pickle jar is empty.

But, then a wolf arrives at her door proclaiming that it is her lucky day. She’s won a pot.

And, this wolf just keeps returning with more goodies for her from celery to onions.

Do you have an idea where this is going? Yep, the wolf returns for duck soup which is feeling very unlucky!

But, then the wolf slips on a marble starting a chain reaction.

Turns out Susan is a lucky duck!

How to Play the Lucky Duck Race to the Pot Game

This game builds awareness of syllables in words from one syllable to four syllables.

game board and pieces for Race to the Pot to go with Lucky Duck

Materials: this printable (see below), scissors, 4 playing pieces, laminator (optional)

Set-Up:  Print the game board and pieces.  Cut the picture pieces along the dotted lines.  Laminate everything for durability if desired.  Place a playing piece on each soup ingredient for the number of students playing.  Turn the picture cards face down in a pile.

Play:  The person whose birthday is closest to March starts.

Player one selects a picture card, names the picture, and claps the number of syllables in the word to count. If the remaining players agree with the syllable count, then player one moves that number of spots. For example, if the picture card is hook and the student counts one syllable in hook, then the student moves one space clockwise around the board.

Play continues to player two. Land on a lucky duck and the player gets to move ahead 2 spaces. Land on a wolf and the player moves back 2 spaces.

Reshuffle the cards if more are needed. Make it around the board to your starting space and then head up to the pot. The first person to the pot wins.
