For almost 20 years now, I have been passionate about growing our youngest readers.  However,  in the last three years my passion has spread like wild-fire and has started a chain reaction!  So, what fueled this fire?   It was the birth of my boys!

Being a Mom of Growing Readers

Three years ago I became a mom and my teaching and learning shifted to the absolute youngest learner- a newborn.  A year and half later, I was honored to welcome another little reader into my life.  It has been pure joy and learning ever since.

I vividly remember the first book we read to each of the boys.

first book read to my son

My husband picked Five Monkeys Jumping on a Bed by Christelow for my oldest son.  We read to him the very first day he came home from the hospital.

When my second son was born,  his 17 month-old brother picked his very first book.  It was a little rhyming labeling book with bright pictures.

And, we haven’t stopped reading to them since the day they came home!

Our ritual is to read three books before nap and before bed EVERY night.  Granted, sometimes they fall asleep in the car on the way home from an outing and we don’t get our precious reading time.  But, 98% of the time my kids listen to at least six each day!  And, they always get to pick the books.

Would you like to know what their favorite books have been over the years?

We are a book nut family as well. Good Night Moon and Brown Bear were the first books I read to our kiddos… and we had to get multiple copies over the years as we wore them out 🙂

Glad to be on this Ultimate Baby Guide with you with week!

So valuable to start reading early in life! Also, with the huge volume of new books being printed these days, it’s so important to be selective with current titles as well as old ones.
You have an awesome blog, Jodie!

I love that you remember which book you read first to each of your boys, so adorable. We too have the 3 books before nap/bed rule… my son LOVES reading. Last night he got a fourth book as a reward for doing something… he was so thrilled ;).

    Happy Mothers Day!!
