Sart the New Year off on the right foot with promoting reading and writing.  I’ve rounded-up some great New Year’s with kids ideas to celebrate the occasion and start some new reading and writing habits for the new year!

Let’s start with celebrating the occasion and then we will move into some literacy ideas to begin in the upcoming year.

New Year's ideas for families that will start the year with families reading, writing and having fun. Great activities for New Year's Eve and and throughout the year.

New Year’s With Kids Literacy Ideas

Here are some ideas for celebrating the holiday.

#1  Read a Few Great Books

Grab a few books to read about the New Year.  What Do We Do All Day? has created a great list of books. Squirrel’s New Year’s Resolution by Pat Miller was a fun read for us and is a great one to read to talk about setting resolutions.

#2  Make a Book of Wishes

Make and Takes shows us how to make a simple accordion book to hold our wishes for the new year.

#3  Word of the Year

I love this idea of word of the year from Nurturestore.  It’s a great way to get kids to think about words and choose the just right word to represent a goal they have for the year.  FYI, my word for the new year is CONNECT.  See below on an easy way to connect with me!

#4 Play a Word Game

Here is a fun game to play while you wait for the clock to strike midnight.  Teach Mama shares free printable cards that are holiday themed. Players have to give clues to guess the word.

If you need another word game that would be fun to play, get Apples to Apples Jr.  It’s my favorite!

#5 Make a Wishing Wall

I love this idea from Buggy and Buddy.  Create a wishing wall for the family to plan for the new year.

#6 Sing Songs

Every party needs some music.  Try a few of these New Year’s songs from JDaniel4’s Mom.

#7 Create a Time Capsule

Lots of reflecting, drawing and writing needed to put together this time capsule as a family.  Imagination Tree shows us how to put it together.

Reading and Writing Ideas for the New Year

And, here are some ideas for starting some new routines or rituals in the new year that will promote reading and writing.

#8 Family Dinner Book Club

Family Dinner Book Club

Imagine enjoying a great book with your family each month, creating some fun table crafts to decorate the dinner table, eating a super yummy themed menu, talking over some conversation starters free to print and completing a family service project idea.  Yes, we have a wonderful line-up of books for the new year.  Or, you can choose from any of the past 24 Family Dinner Book Club books we have already covered.

#9 Table Topics

365 Conversation Starter to get your kids talking at the dinner table from growingbookbybook.com

Make a point to build conversation skills with your family at the dinner table each night.  Here are 365 free printable table topics to last you all year.

#10 Winter Reading Challenge

A reading challenge that will keep the kids busy during the long cold winter months.

Start the new year by reading with your kids every night.  Share pictures of the books you are reading with us on Instagram using #growingreaders.  Here are some great ideas for passing the long winter and enjoying some great books.  Take the Winter Reading Challenge and start a reading habit with your kids.

P.S. This is just a start!  Join us all year long as we share awesome literacy ideas that will keep the kids reading.  Sign up for our free newsletter for weekly ideas.—->SIGN UP HERE
