It is all about preschool songs featuring evergreen trees. We have featured a few preschool songs in this series including “I’m a Hungry Spider” and “The Leaves of of the Trees”. This week we created a preschool song all about evergreen trees!

Why We Chose This Activity
Once again, I’m always looking for ways to build literacy skills based on the interests of my kids.
Evergreen trees are a symbol of the season and something that my boys have shown a lot of interest in exploring. One of our favorite books during the holidays is Mr. Willowby’s Christmas Tree by Robert Barry.
Mr. Willowby’s evergreen tree is a bit too tall for his house so he has the butler remove the top. The butler passes on the treetop and it is once again too tall for the next home. It gets trimmed again and passed on to another home until finally, the last little piece finds a home with the mice inside Mr. Willowby’s house.
Rhyming is a phonological awareness skill that will help your little ones with reading down the road. Singing preschool songs are a great way to develop phonological awareness skills.
Preparing the Down By the Tree Farm Song and Action Rhyme
Print the song that you can download here to have on hand until you can memorize the catchy little tune.
Down By The Tree Farm (based on the tune “Down By The Bay”)
Down by the tree farm
Where the evergreen grows
Is a home
to many things
And in that tree
You just might find
a pretty little bird
singing the sweetest song you ever heard
down by the tree farm
Additional verses:
a brown pine cone
that fell by a stone
a frisky gray squirrel
doing twirls
needles short and long
that stay on all year long
Singing and Actions
As you sing, there are actions you can do with each verse.
Down by the tree farm (point down)
Where the evergreen grows (make a triangle above your head with hands)
Is a home
to many things
And in that tree
You just might find
a pretty little bird (use arms to flap as wings)
singing the sweetest song you ever heard (say, “tweet, tweet”)
down by the tree farm (point down)
Additional verses:
a brown pine cone (make a fist)
that fell by a stone (let fist fall into the opposite hand)
a frisky gray squirrel (wiggle body)
doing twirls (twirl in circle)
needles short and long (using two fingers to show short and long)
that stay on all year long (hug arms tight to body)
See it in action below!
Enjoy singing this preschool song and over and over to help little ones learn about evergreen trees, practice rhyming and getting their little bodies moving!

I used to sing “Down by the Bay” with my boys. They are older now, but this is so cute:).
