The Playful Preschool Series theme this week is ponds. We had fun with a playful writing activity to tie in with our learning.
Fish in a Pond
Why We Chose This Activity
We made oobleck last week and I had it sitting in a zip-lock bag. My kids were playing with the bag and having fun pressing on it. I started to brainstorm how else we could use this cool concoction and came up with this writing idea.
My oldest preschooler is not very interested in writing on most days. I’m always looking for creative ways to encourage him to interact with writing. This idea seemed like it could capture his interest!
Setting Up
Materials Needed: blue oobleck, zip-lock freezer bag (quart sized), permanent black marker, washable black marker, foam sheets (various colors), scissors, and a paper towel
1. Fill the freezer bag with blue oobleck.
2. Draw three fish on the outside of the bag with a permanent marker.
3. Cut fish shapes from the colored foam sheets.
4. On each fish write a letter that your child needs to practice.
Time to Play
Invite your child to select one foam fish and name the letter. Using a washable marker, he can write the letter on the three fish in the pond. Erase with a paper towel or cloth. Repeat with a new letter.
My son enjoyed the novelty of writing on a different surface.
He also enjoyed picking up the bag and squeezing it which was also working on building hand strength!
