It’s a new week of the Playful Preschool Series . This week’s theme is castles. This month we have already explored balls, space and Earth.
We had so much fun creating this fun reading nook idea to fit the topic of the week.

Why We Chose This Activity

Last week we checked out a book called [easyazon_link identifier=”0152020292″ locale=”US” tag=”groboobyboo-20″]My Book Box[/easyazon_link] by Will Hillenbrand from the library. I think my boys really enjoyed it because they have played with cardboard boxes so much over the years.
It seems that many times the box a present comes in outlasts the actual gift!
While cleaning our basement after a water leak this week, I found a big box and knew instantly we needed to use it with this week’s theme of castles. So, the cardboard castle idea was born!
Setting Up
You need one large box, scissors or box knife, [easyazon_link identifier=”B003MVPQN0″ locale=”US” tag=”groboobyboo-20″]packing tape[/easyazon_link] and markers to create your castle.
We did a simple decorative top.
Our drawbridge opened across a small moat which was the bottom flap of the box.
Finally, we labeled the castle Rodriguez Reading Castle.
Fill the castle with books!
Time to Read
The boys had fun loading the castle with books and reading.
For a little while they even sat outside the castle and dangled their feet in the moat while they read!
Their play and reading didn’t end there. They enjoyed playing all sorts of pretend games using the castle as a prop. It was so fun listening to them throughout the day.

Our kids love to sit inside of boxes, pretend the boxes are their turtle shells and more. I love that you have utilized one of kids favorite things and made it into a reading nook!

I love this idea! We have a giant cardboard box that the kids have been playing in. So far it’s been a rocket and a play house. A castle would be super fun, too.
