Stories About Sharks for Children
Mako and Tiger by Scott Rothman is the story of two sharks of the sea. Meet two hungry sharks that want everything to themselves. They are very competitive. But, when a hook drops from above and trouble arises, will the two come together and maybe even become friends?
Shawn Loves Sharks by Curtis Manley is a tale about a young boy fascinated with sharks. He pretty much lives and breathes sharks including owning over 100 books about the creatures. A class assignment is given one day to research an animal and Shawn doesn’t get assigned the shark but rather a leopard seal. But, he soon discovers he likes seals and more importantly makes a new friend in the process.
How to Survive as a Shark by Kristen Foote is all about shark survival 101. It’s a great mix of a fun story and shark facts. I even learned new words like oophagy and electroreception.
An underwater live report gets interrupted by a shark in Misunderstood Shark by Ame Dyckman. And, this interrupting shark insists that it’s just misunderstood. He’s not trying to eat anyone. It’s a fun and playful read-aloud.
Hear from the sharks in I Am the Shark by Joan Holub. Told from each shark’s perspective we learn all about the Great White Shark, the Mako Shark, and more as they each try to tell why they are “the shark.”
Shark Block by Christopher Franceschelli is a super hefty board book with fold-out flaps that give us an introduction to the sharks of the water.
Informational Books About Sharks for Kids
Chomp: A Shark Romp by Michael Paul introduces us to the differences among sharks. For example, some prefer company and some would rather be solo. Some sharks like the whale shark are gentle and others like the bull shark can be fierce. Simple text and bright bold pictures make this a good introduction to sharks.
The Shark Book by the amazing pairing of Steve Jenkins & Robin Page will enthrall shark enthusiasts with details, diagrams, maps, and more.
Shark Lady: The True Story of How Eugenie Clark Became the Ocean’s Most Fearless Scientist by Jess Keating takes you deep into the sea to study those feared creatures-sharks. Well, Eugenie Clark wouldn’t say they needed to be feared.
Another book that looks at Eugenie Clark’s work is Swimming With Sharks: The Daring Discoveries of Eugenie Clark by Heather Lang. This book looks at how Clark became fascinated with these creatures of the sea and how that lead to a career studying them at a time when it wasn’t common for women to be scientists.
