The Book

Snowflake Bentley by Jacqueline Briggs Martin

This non-fiction selection showcases Wilson Bentley and his passion for photographing snowflakes.  He discovered that no two snowflakes are alike and each one is beautiful.  Snowflake Bently won the 1999 Caldecott Medal.

Topics

Here are six conversation starters to get your dinner book club rolling.  Just click on the link below for a one-page file that you can print and then cut apart.  Use the cards on your chosen dinner night.  You, of course, don’t have to use all of them or you may even have some other discussion points that developed while you were reading.  These are just meant to be a guide.  Enjoy your dinner conversation!

  • Bentley loved to learn and investigate.  What is a topic that you are interested in studying and learning?
  • Wilson Bentley showed perseverance in pursuing his passion.  When have you persevered through something?
  • What did you learn about snowflakes from the book?
  • Bentley discovered that no two snowflakes are alike and that each one is beautiful.  What other things can you think of that are unique and beautiful?
  • How do you like to spend your time on a snowy day?
  • Let’s brainstorm a list of words that we associate with snow.

Family Service Project

Every snowflake is unique and beautiful.  So are the people who are close to us.  This month make a special snowflake for a few important people in your life.  Below are some snowflake craft ideas.  You may also include a note explaining why the snowflake you created for the person reminds you of that person.  Mail the special snowflakes to loved ones.
