Yesterday, I shared the book for kids that we received from a fun summer book exchange project hosted by The Educators’ Spin On It. Today, I’m going to share the package that we sent to The New Vincent Family.
As an educator with a reading specialist background, I love a challenge. I think it’s important to pair children (especially reluctant readers) with books that interest them. I also like to pull in books that relate to something happening in the world (ie. The Olympics).
For the Summer Love Books exchange, we were partnered with The New Vincent Family. The family has two girls (9 months and 2.5 years). The oldest likes to play on the playground, go to the library and put puzzles together.
So, what did Growing Book by Book come up with? Here’s a peek at the package getting ready to be sealed and sent.
And, the title we chose to send…
Stars and Stripes by Salina Yoon is a board book that introduces young readers to the American flag. It’s durable enough for a 9 month old, and sophisticated enough for a 2.5 year old. The book and package arrived just in time for Flag Day, but would also be a great read for the 4th of July.
Here’s a look at the activities that we sent to go along with the book.
Materials (stickers, fabric, ribbon, colored paper, glue, colored sticks and paper bag templates) were sent to create their very own red, white and blue flags. The family was encouraged to go outside and wave their flags while singing the following tune.
THE RED WHITE AND BLUE
“When the Saints Come Marching In”
Oh, when the flag comes marching in, Oh, when the flag comes marching in,
How I love to see its three colors,
The red, white, and blue
Singing helps to model reading fluency and I love that this activity promotes exercise outside too.
Since the oldest child likes to put together puzzles, I created a name puzzle made from colored foam and patterned paper for her to practice recognizing the letters in her name. Here is how that turned out.
We hope the Vincent family liked their package. It was fun for us to put it together.

I have two boys (3.5 and 16 months). My oldest is just starting to sound out words and read very simple books (Bob books, etc). He loves rockets and outer space and both boys adore construction vehicles and fire trucks.
Thanks.

What a great idea! I have three little boys (and one teenage boy). The little guys are ages 4, and 4 months (twins). The four year old loves vehicles of any kind. Not quite sure what kinds of things the babies like, but they sure like to put things in their mouths! 🙂

My son Gavin is 5 and a very gentle soul. He loves courdoroy and a pocket for courdoroy. He can use a boost in social/emotional issues before going into kindergarten.

What an awesome giveaway!! I have a 3yr 8month old son and a 9 month old daughter. My son loves jumping, climbing, riding his 4 wheeler, playdoh, books, being outside, and doing anything that dad’s doing 🙂 My daughter is in a super fun stage and enjoys emptying out baskets, bins, and drawers, dropping stuff from her high chair, learning to walk, peek-a-boo, and touch and feel books.
BTW…found your blog via Playdough to Plato, and I’m soooo happy I did! LOVIN what I’ve read so far 🙂

I LOVE books and related activities!!! I’m still working on my lil guy about it 🙂 he’s coming around a little. He is 31 months old loves cars, playdough, mess making, running wild, water play, the movie WALL-E. We are currently working on his speech/langue development. He’s apx a year-ish behind, just starting to say one word at a time. He knows most of his animal sounds and I’ve been trying to read him books with few but really expressive (and repetitive)words and cool pictures.
This is a great idea for a giveaway. I’ve been brainstorming lately about giving a book and activity packages out as birthday gifts to friends…did I mention I LOVE books and related activities 🙂
