The Jacket I Wear in the Snow by Shirley Neitzel is a cumulative tale about a child prepping all the layers of clothing to get ready for some fun in the snow. Then, once outside the fun is short-lived when the cold and wet set in. But, mom is there to help.

This cumulative tale makes it ideal for sequencing activities.
1. Sequence the items as they appear in the story. Do this as a class with the color set of items or have students use the b&w sheet to individually sequence This is a good way to keep students engaged in the story as you read the cumulative tale. . Here is the order the items appear.

Zipper
Scarf
Stocking cap
Mittens
Sweater
Jeans
Boots
Long underwear
Socks
2. Give descriptive clues from the story and have students identify the items being described. They can hold up the item to match the description.
Jacket
Zipper- caught
Scarf- woolly and red
Stocking cap- for my head
Mittens- hung from each arm
Sweater- itchy and warm
Jeans- stiff in the knee
Boots- too big
Long underwear- bunchy and hot
Socks- wrinkled a lot
3. Use the “How I Dress for the Snow” sheet to have students draw and label how they prepare to go out into the snow.
