Our house is full of Christmas books and activities. We have been reading a few holidays books each day and making ornaments to fill our tree! I love this time of year.
One of my favorite holiday books for kids is the Legend of the Poinsettia by Tomie dePaola.
Today, I’m so excited to be a part of the 10 Days of a Kid-Made Christmas. Each participant is sharing an ornament inspired by a children’s book. So many great ideas for our literacy tree!

The Legend of the Poinsettia
The Book
The Legend of the Poinsettia is a Mexican legend that tells how the poinsettia came to be the flower of the Holy Night. Tomie dePaola is a master storyteller and the pictures in the book are beautiful.
The Ornament
Materials Needed: 1 sheet of red felt, 1 sheet of green felt, pink glitter glue, fabric glue, small piece of bubble wrap, yellow acrylic paint, paintbrush, scissors, string or ribbon
1. Cut five petals out of red felt. We free handed them, but you could use a pattern to trace.
2. Cut out three green felt leaves.
3. Using the pink glitter paint to squeeze on the veins for each petal. Allow to dry.
4. Cut a small piece of bubble wrap into a circle and paint with yellow acrylic paint. Allow to dry before moving on to the next step.
5. You are now ready to assemble your flower with fabric glue. Allow to dry.
6. Attach a string or ribbon so you will be able to hang it on the tree.

Really great selection. I love Tomie dePaola’s books and read them to my daughter in the 1990s — when he did a lot of book tours. But, I’ve not read this one. Thank you for sharing, such a great holiday book by a master storyteller.

He is such a classic. I have such fond memories of reading his books to former classes. I would have loved to of met him on a book tour!
