Animal Friends

This Way, Charlie by Caron Levis is inspired by a real animal friendship between a goat and a horse at Wild Heart Ranch Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Center in Claremore, Oklahoma.  It packs a powerful message about kindness, patience, and love as well as accepting each other’s challenges and differences.

Books About People Who Love Animals

The Bug Girl: A True Story by Sophia Spencer is the story of a girl who was teased for loving bugs.  But, a bug-loving community came around to support her.  Be you!

Evelyn the Adventurous Entomologist: The True Story of a World-Traveling Bug Hunter by Christine Evans is the story of a girl who loved bugs in a time when girls weren’t supposed to be into bugs or work.  But, she turned her passion into a career.

The Little People, Big Dreams series highlights several individuals who love and work with animals including Jane Goodall and David Attenborough.

Books About Multiple Kinds of Animals

I’ve Got a Tail: Terrific Tails of the Animal World by Julie Murphy looks at all the different ways tails serve animals.  They can do some truly amazing things like helping animals spin or anchoring fish to have dinner.

Did you know some tails can even fall off?  And, some tails serve as snuggly blankets.

Learn all about the tails of Common Ringtail Possum, Thresher Sharks, and more in this engaging nonfiction read-aloud.  There is even a map to locate each animal’s habitat in the back of the book.

Whose Footprint is That? by Darrin Lunde is full of footprint clues and other visual clues as children try to guess which animals has which footprint. Short enough for short attentions but also long enough to provide learning and new vocabulary.

Do you know what the names of different animals are called? Learn about the name of groups of animals and how they work together in a great book called Packs: Strength in Numbers by Hannah Salyer.

Ever wonder how different animals sleep? Find out in How Do You Go to Sleep? by Kate McMullan.  Also, check out McMullan’s, How Do You Take a Bath?

Steve Jenkins is an author/illustrator to know for nonfiction children’s books.  He has lots of them.  One of my favorites is What Do You Do With a Tail Like This?  It explores how animals use their tales, noses, mouths, eyes, ears, feet, etc. to help them live.  Children will have fun guessing which animal all those parts belong to.

Young children love lifesized things especially when they can compare the things to part of their own bodies.  That is just what they’ll do in Lifesize by Sophy Henn. Children will get to measure their handprint with the paw of a polar bear and see how long a toucan’s nose is compared to their own.

Atlas of Animal Adventures and  Atlas of Ocean Adventuresby Lucy Letherland, Emily Hawkins, and Rachel Williams are oversized gorgeous with rich details of favorite animals.  Lots of information about different types of animals is included.

Do Baby Elephants Suck Their Trunks? by Ben Lerwill asks us to think of baby habits humans have and to see if animal babies have those same habits.   Learn about baby animals that get carried around to how baby animals get clean.
