BAT BOOKS FOR CHILDREN

I’ll be honest. Bats creep me out a bit. But, I have no squeams when it comes to bat books for kids. Those I find completely delightful and fascinating. So, let’s fly through these books. This is just one of the many books about animals lists you’ll find here at Growing Book by Book.

Fun Stories Featuring Bat Characters for Children

The first book that comes to mind when I think about bats is the classic, Stellaluna by Janell Cannon. Stellaluna falls into a bird’s nest where she is taken care of until she can be reunited with her mother.

Two different families who live in the trees learn about each other and more importantly how to help each other in Owl Bat Bat Owl by Marie-Louise Fitzpatrick.

Bat Count: A Citizen Science Story by Anna Forrester is a fictional story but it does introduce us to a real scientific contribution- citizen scientists. A family observes bats around their home.

Are you ready for a bat to talk to you?  Because in I Am Bat by Morag Hood, that is what is going to happen.  Our main character seems to think you took his cherries.  Did you?

Little Bat is curious about the animals who go about their day.  But, Mama insists that they go to sleep and get ready for the night.  However, Little Bat can’t sleep and curiosity leads him on an adventure.  Will he be able to stay awake for adventures with Rusty the Squirrel?  Find out in Little Bat Up All Day by Brian Lies.

Check out more of Brian Lies books featuring bats.

Bats Around the Clock by Kathi Appelt is a fun nod to the old show American Bandstand.  It’s a silly dancing romp around the clock so it’s a fun read for telling time too.  And, if you want some tips for reading it aloud, listen to this read-aloud on YouTube here.

Informational Books About Bats

Fiona the Fruit Bat by Dan Riskin teaches us all about echolocation as a young bat sets out on her first flight at night.

Amara and the Bats by Emma Reynolds is about a bat lover who moves to a new town where too many trees are being cut down and causing a loss of habitat for bats. Amara learns that individuals can make a difference and create change so she seeks to save the bats.

Get ready for a crash course in sound in Oscar and the Bat by Geoff Waring.  With the help of Bat, Oscar learns about sounds that are near and far, loud and soft, and deep and high.

The Bat by Elise Gravel is a fun informational book for beginning readers full of bat facts.  Did you know that bats live on every continent except Antarctica?  I love how much you learn in this book in a very entertaining way.

You’ll find a crisp, clean, and well-organized layout full of information in The Bat Book by Charlotte Milner. There’s lots of information that you can take in bits and pieces in this browseable nonfiction work.

If you have a bat enthusiast who really wants to get into the nitty gritty of bats, I highly recommend the Science Comics: Bats by Falynn Koch.  This is such a well-done graphic novel series that gives you so much information in a very kid-appealing manner.  There is so much vocabulary packed in these books.
