It’s time for Virtual Book Club for Kids! Our featured author this month is Julia Donaldson. We love Donaldson’s books for kids in our house. In fact, the book we are featuring today is my 2 year-old son’s favorite book of the year!
Let me tell you a little bit about how Virtual Book Club for Kids works in case you are new to the series. The Educators’ Spin On It, Toddler Approved and Rainy Day Mum have put together a wonderful line-up of great authors to explore. On the second Thursday of each month, talented bloggers will be sharing one of the three featured books by the highlighted author that month. Each blogger will share an activity or craft to compliment one of the three books. You are invited to try out as many of the ideas that you feel would be a good fit for your kids.
Now, onto the Julia Donaldson book we chose this month.

Julia Donaldson’s Books for Kids
Julia Donaldson is an amazing author and when she pairs with Axel Scheffler for illustrations it is pure magic. This past summer we featured the super fun Super Worm for story time. For Virtual Book Club for Kids we have chosen Stick Man.
The Book: Stick Man
In the story the Stick Man becomes separated from his family tree. He ends up in a swan’s nest, a dog’s mouth and eventually in a pile to be used in the fireplace. Fortunately he is awakened by a sound in the fireplace. The jolly Santa Claus is stuck in the chimney. Stick Man helps him out and continues with him on his journey to deliver toys to the boys and girls. Santa has one last thank you gift when he returns Stick Man back to his family tree.
The Activity: Stick Man Ornament and Gift Card
This is an easy gift idea for kids to make. Pair the ornament, gift card and copy of the Stick Man book as super cute gift to give another child or family.
The Ornament:
Let the kids scout the neighborhood for the perfect stick for a Stick Man. Add a couple of googly eyes and tie a piece of yarn to form a scarf which will double as the way to hang the ornament on the tree.
The Gift Card
Using brown paper cut out 5 rectangles (one large and four small). Have the kids arrange the pieces on a blank card to form a Stick Man. Glue the pieces down and add googly eyes. Now they can write a special holiday message to the recipient of their gift.
Pack the Gift
You are now ready to wrap the Stick Man ornament, card and copy of the book as a holiday gift for a special someone. Wrap the book in a brown paper bag, glue a few twigs to the top, attach your ornament amongst the twigs, add some twine string as ribbon, and you have a lovely presentation. Nothing beats a handmade gift!
Now, it’s time to explore some other great activities and crafts to compliment Julia Donaldson’s books.

These books and activities look fun! Thank you – can’t wait to read them. In fact, I DO have to wait – right now I have too many hold requests in our library system and can’t add any more. 🙂 I’ve made a list of these books to check out soon. Love your resources, especially to incorporate into our homeschool life. 🙂 Thanks Jodie!

I have that problem too Beth! We love Julia Donaldson books and usually have to order most of them from other libraries because our local library only carries a few of them. We highly recommend Stick Man, Superworm, and The Spiffiest Giant in Town.
