Eric Carle is a beloved author with many books. One of those favorite books is The Very Busy Spider. The Very Busy Spider preschool activity is wonderful to use after enjoying the story to build letter recognition.

The Very Busy Spider Book and Preschool Activity
The Book
The Very Busy Spider is the story of a spider who busily spins her web as the other animals stop and ask her to do something else. At the end of the story, she catches a fly in her web and settles in for a good night’s rest after a busy day. The story is simple and repetitive which appeals to young readers. And, Carle’s classic collage illustrations are featured once again in this book. Children will also enjoy touching the raised web on each spread of pages.
The Very Busy Spider Preschool Activity
We decided to create an outdoor spider web and catch letter flies.
On the garage door we created a spider web with painters tape.
Then we brought out our favorite magnetic alphabet letters and laid them out on the ground.
I took turns calling out a letter for my youngest son and saying a sound for my older son. They would find the correct letter and “fly” it to the web. Since the garage door is magnetic, the letters get “stuck” in the web.
The boys had so much fun running around and flying the letter flies to the web.
Simple, easy and fun!
