During Reading Opportunities
While you are reading aloud the story, there are numerous opportunities to build engagement and literacy skills.
- Invite students to listen for onomatopoeia words- clang, fast, and thumpity-thump. Notice how these words look different than the other printed words in the book. Students may enjoy using objects to make sound effects for these words when they are read. Pan/pot lids hit together to make a great clang sound.
- There is a repeated section in the book that starts, “Then…” Invite students to say that section with you.
- Keep an ongoing list of all the tasks firefighters perform.
- Discuss the vocabulary in the story.
- ignited
- training
- eager
- grit
After Reading Opportunities
Work on letter identification of Ff and the sound of /f/ in these beginning sound activities.
Spray Out
This printable activity (see below for download) helps children recognize beginning sounds. Name each image on the fire flame. If the item begins with the sound /f/, then students get to “spray it out” by coloring it blue or dotting it with a blue dot marker. Additionally, you could laminate the sheet and have students use blue playdough balls to cover the spots.
Handwriting and Sound Work
This printable (see below for download) helps children recognize and form the letters F and f as well as the sound the letter represents. Students name the letters and pictures noticing the beginning sound of each.
Then, students trace the letters and practice writing them on their own.
Finally, students recognize the letter F and f printed in different fonts.
