Think back to a time when you were super excited about something. Perhaps it was an anticipated vacation to the beach, the arrival of a new child, or dinner out with old friends. Why were we so excited? And, what the heck does this have to do with learning the alphabet?
We were excited because these experiences were filled with new experiences, social interaction, and having fun. AND, those are the same qualities we want to capture when we want to get kids learning about the alphabet or any other learning experience.
Let’s dive in on how to make learning the ABCs filled with new experiences, fun, and full of social interaction.

Make it Social
Most kids learn their alphabet as toddlers and preschoolers. Little ones love to interact with their caregiver. So, make your alphabet play an interactive and social experience.
Play right alongside the kids, ask questions, and dialogue back and forth about your hands-on work.

Create New Experiences
Ah, the attention span of toddlers and preschoolers is not very long. Isn’t it amazing how busy and full of energy little ones can be? They are constantly exploring and discovering.
Think about this when looking for opportunities to explore the alphabet with kids. Here are a few ideas.
- Go on ABC hunt outside. Look for letters in the environment.
- Sing the traditional ABC song in a whisper voice or a big giant voice.
- Take magnetic letters outside and play with them on a metal garage door.
- Play hide-and-seek with letters. Hide a few letters and then find them.
Think outside the box when doing ordinary tasks or using familiar materials. How can you alter the experiences or materials to make them new and different?
Make it Fun
This is probably the most important key to making learning the alphabet exciting for little ones.
Hands-on fun play is vital for engaging toddlers and preschoolers.
Manipulatives that kids can touch and explore will help make learning concrete.
