The Book
Llama Llama Red Pajama is the story of Baby Llama who has just been tucked into bed. But, he misses his Mama. While Mama is another room, Llama Llama grows restless and worried. In the end, Mama assures him that even though he may not be able to see her, she is always nearby.
The Activity
After reading the story, practice color word recognition and build fine motor skills with this activity. We completed this activity when friends came to visit. It really worked well for adapting to multiple age levels.
Materials needed: red construction paper, scissors, colored paper or paint swatch samples, glue sticks, sorting sheet (download below), 6 small paper plates, marker, die
Cut a pair of red pajamas out of construction paper for each child.
Label each small paper plate with a color word. We used blue, green, yellow, orange, white, and purple. You just don’t want to use red since that is the color of the pajama base.
Have the kids cut out small pieces (young children) or shapes (older children) from the colored paper or paint swatch samples. This is a great way to build fine motor skills. After the pieces are cut, have each child sort the pieces on the correctly labeled plate. We are working on color word recognition!
Place the filled plates in the middle of the table. Each child will start with a sorting sheet which you can download for free below.
Each child takes a turn rolling the die and selecting the correct number of colored pieces for their first colored word. We even get a little math in this activity. Place the pieces on the sheet next to the correct word. We are reinforcing color word recognition! Pass the die and let the next person have their turn. Continue until each word has colored pieces next to it.
Now, pass out a red pajama base to each child. Time to decorate the pajamas in any fashion that is desired using the pieces from the sorting sheet.
Our older friends decided to add a llama face and feet to their pajamas.
A super fun color words activity to compliment Llama Llama Red Pajama.
