Miguel’s Community Garden by JaNay Brown-Wood is a delightful read-aloud and full of talking points and teaching opportunities. Miguel is throwing a party in his community garden and would like some sunflowers. Go with him to identify sunflowers and in the process learn about all sorts of things that grow in the garden.

Activities to Use with Miguel’s Community Garden
My Garden Plan
Use the planning sheet to design your own garden plot. Add vegetables, fruits, and/or flowers.
Let’s See How a Sunflower Grows
Sequence the life cycle of a sunflower. Cut the stages apart on the dotted lines. Mix the images and then begin sequencing the growing process.
Make a Sunflower Seed Salad
In the back of Miguel’s Garden, you will find a recipe for a sunflower seed salad to make. Grab some romaine lettuce, spinach, bell pepper, cucumber, mushrooms, sunflower seeds, lemon juice, and olive oil and you’ll be ready to make this healthy and tasty dish.
