Shanté Keys and the New Year’s Peas by Gail Piernas-Davenport is a neat book to pick up and have ready when the students return from break. Shante is on a trip around the neighborhood to find some blacked eye peas her family needs for their New Year’s meal. Along the way, she learns about the traditional eats that her neighbors enjoy in the new year from the grocery store owner from Scotland who eats haggis and cheese to Chef Ortiz who enjoys grapes. As Shante talks to each person, she invites them all over to try black-eyed peas at her house.

Get inspired to make your resolutions for the new year with Squirrel’s New Year’s Resolution by Pat Miller.

Natasha Wing has a whole series of The Night Before… books including The Night Before New Year’s that takes a look at the traditions and symbols of the holiday.

Different cultures celebrate the new year at different times of the year.  Explore some of those through poems in Every Month Is a New Year: Celebrations Around the World by Marilyn Singer.
