It’s going to get silly if you mix a unicorn, dino, and shark into a book.  And, then throw in a kitten in a sweater.  Watch out!  Check out Jonathon Fenske’s book, A Unicorn, A Dinosaur, and a Shark Walk Into a Book.

RACE TO THE TOP BEGINNING SOUND ACTIVITY

Skill: Identifying beginning sounds

Materials and Set-Up: Each player will need a printable playing board and three playing pieces (mini erasers, tokens, etc.) One die (assemble prior to play) will be needed for each small group playing.

Each player should place each of their playing pieces under each of the three columns on their playing board.

Play:

The player wearing the most colors goes first. This person also decides which animal (unicorn, dinosaur, shark) everyone is racing to. The first person to reach that animal on their board wins.

Player 1 rolls the die. Player 1 moves their token in that column one spot up. The player names the picture and then identifies the beginning sound of the picture/word. If correct, the player remains on the spot. If incorrect, the player moves back/down one spot. Play continues to player 2.

The first player to the chosen animal wins.
